Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s top Shiite religious authority, met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in a sign of support for the newly formed Iraqi government and its fight against the Islamic State, AP reported Oct. 20. Al-Sistani has shunned all politicians in recent years in protest of the way they run the country. The news comes amid a string of attacks against the Shia in and around Baghdad over the past few days.
