Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced that he fired four top army commanders after they failed to halt advances by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant insurgents, BBC reported June 17. The insurgents captured the northern cities of Mosul, Tikrit and Tal Afar the week of June 9. They also held parts of Baqouba, a city 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Baghdad, before being driven out in a June 17 counteroffensive by the Iraqi military and affiliated militias.
