Iraq: Battalions Form In Mosul To Expel Islamic State

Battalions of Sunni militants and factions trained in Kurdistan and Iran formed in Mosul to combat Islamic State militants and expel them from the city, former Speaker of the House Osama al-Nujaifi said in a statement, Al Mirbad reported Aug. 1. As the appointed commander of the Mosul battalions and leader of the biggest Sunni bloc in parliament, al-Nujaifi said the popular uprising against the Islamic State began after the Islamic State bombed a local shrine and continued to harm civilians. The battalions are the first example of military coordination between Iranian, Kurdish and Sunni forces.
